Hospitality Businesses Come Together To Solve Recruitment Issues

Hospitality Rising is the biggest ever recruitment campaign actively contributing to changing the perception of working in hospitality, promoting over 400,000 unfilled vacancies across the UK and encouraging people to choose why hospitality for their career.

Staff shortage in the hospitality industry is at an all-time high. Data provided by KAM Media revealed that only 1 in 5 UK professionals would consider a job in hospitality after 660,000 placements were lost due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Businesses are tackling recruitment issues by themselves and even though they’ve been struggling to fill the vacancies so far, things are about to change – for the better.

The Hospitality industry’s biggest ever recruitment campaign

It’s called Hospitality Rising and it’s raising £5m for its launch. The goal of the campaign is to change the perception of working in the hospitality industry and highlight why it is a positive career choice.

Hospitality Rising’s founder Mark McCulloch’s mission is to ask every hospitality business to pledge £10 per employee in order to raise the money needed for the launch. The funds will then be spent on the biggest advertising campaign this industry has seen in order to promote 400,000 vacancies that are available across the UK and move the perception and consideration of hospitality as a career from 1 in 5 to 2 in 5.

The £5m targets are expected to be reached by May 2022 and by the looks of it, the campaign is on track with its goal.

Appreciative support from top businesses

The campaign got full government support from the Hospitality & Tourism Sector Skills Board (HTSB). Current backers of the campaign include Hilton, Pret a Manger, Hawksmoor, Buzzworks, and many other high-profile businesses.

Kate Nicholls OBE, UKHospitality’s Chief Executive, revealed that they were working very closely with Hospitality Rising to bring this campaign to life. UKH is extremely supportive of the initiative and optimistic about its positive effects on the industry’s recruitment. Nicholls stated that the campaign will serve as a vital intervention that will help boost the industry’s recovery after the Covid-19 pandemic.

As of February 2022, the campaign has raised more than £300,000. It’s also invested £250,000 into creative strategy and will work closely with some of the best agencies such as Forever Beta, Ogilvy, and VCCP. The early response from the industry is a clear sign that the businesses are in need of a new recruitment approach.

It’s time to solve the recruitment shortage together

Our industry puts people and communities first – so why not join forces and come together as an industry to solve the recruitment issue? In the past, we’ve worked more individually but it’s time to develop a different approach and show people why our industry is one of the largest in the country.

UKHospitality revealed that the industry is currently missing 20% of its regular workforce. The UK Government is well-aware of this issue and in September 2021, it launched the Hospitality Sector Council to further help the industry recover.

At Otolo, we fully support coming together to solve the recruitment problem. It is clear that individual recruitment strategies are no longer working. Not only are we competing with each other, but we’re also competing against other big businesses who took in our talent when the industry was put on pause. The truth is, we’re all in this together. We believe in acquiring and retaining talent through connections, collaborations, community, and courses.

This is why we’ve decided to offer free CPD approved courses to hospitality professionals and those who are joining the industry. Our free courses include:

Level 3 in Hospitality Leadership and Professional Development
