At Otolo, we think excellence deserves a shout and we couldn’t be prouder of the talent in our industry who thrive by providing the best service possible to people. On Tuesday 15th February, the annual Gold Service Scholarship took place at Claridge’s in Mayfair, London.
Originally from Milan and having graduated from the best hospitality school in Italy, Thomas Gammella, Restaurant Manager at The Clockspire in Sherborne, Somerset at the time of the competition, won the new 2022 Scholar. Over 200 profiles representing UK hospitality gathered to “champion the eight young Winning Finalists” and congratulate Thomas, who shared his impressions with us:
“It is an honour to have had the chance to be a part of this extraordinary journey and to have won such a prestigious competition. I’ve worked really hard to land here since I started working in Italy and I’m delighted to have won the 2022 Scholarship, the most highly regarded distinction in hospitality in the UK. I’m grateful for Alessandro Fasoli’s support and all the trustees from whom I’ve learned so much to make it to where I am today. They all individually encouraged me to continuously challenge myself and provide customers with the finest service possible in hospitality. As being the new 2022 Scholar I’d love to use this example to inspire younger people to progress in their careers in the industry, and to become a mentor myself, the same way I got my mentors’ back throughout my background from being a waiter to a restaurant director.”
Launched in 2012, The Scholarship aims to encourage excellence in hospitality, and its Patron is Her Majesty The Queen. The Trustees are some of the UK’s most highly regarded professionals:
- Alastair Storey OBE (Chairman)
- Willy Bauer OBE (Founder)
- Edward Griffiths CVO (Chairman of the Judges)
- Sergio Rebecchi MdL
- Silvano Giraldin MdL
- Thomas Kochs
- Knut Wylde
- Alessandro Fasoli MCA
The Scholarship celebrates the art of front-of-house service in food and beverage and nurtures young talent through tailored mentoring, and we couldn’t be more aligned with this approach, at Otolo.
Thanks to the exclusive connections made during their association with the Scholarship, Scholars and Finalists have succeeded in their career progression to date:
- Julien Beltzung, Executive Sommelier, The Glenturret Lalique Restaurant, Perthshire
- Harry Champion, Private Membership Club Manager, Tottenham Hotspur Football Club
- Max Daglish, Assistant Restaurant Manager, Northcote Hotel, Lancashire
- Manon Gaillard, Senior Footman, Royal Household
- Thomas Gammella, Restaurant Manager, Clockspire Restaurant, Somerset (and since February Restaurant Director, The Woodspeen pre-opening, Newbury)
- Riccardo Migliorini, Chef de Rang, Alain Ducasse at the Dorchester
- Valentina Pirri, Guest Relations Manager, Davies and Brook, Claridge’s
- Anne Rasing, Restaurant Supervisor, Kerridge’s Bar & Grill, Corinthia London
The Finalists were exceptional in the several assessments that tested a variety of front-of-house skills, but Thomas Gammella particularly led the way with excellence.
Before joining The Clockspire as a Restaurant Manager at the time of the competition and now the sister property The Woodspeen pre-opening in Newbury as a Restaurant Director, Thomas worked in Milan as a waiter at both Ristorante Da Palmiro and Da Regina Irio, and as a trainee at Hotel dei Giardini.
As the new Scholar, Thomas will enjoy a range of prizes with opportunities to broaden his experience, including work experience at Buckingham Palace and the Mandarin Oriental in Bangkok, an educational visit to Laurent-Perrier and a four-day specialised course, together with all Winning Finalists, at Lausanne Hotel School.
Sergio Rebecchi, Director of Serenata Hospitality said: “The unique educational opportunities Thomas has earned will be of great benefit to achieve his goals in his chosen career path in hospitality.”
At Otolo, we are truly inspired by these achievements. Not only do we want to celebrate but also create the young talent of tomorrow, by providing them with the resources that will encourage them to choose hospitality for their career.
With our community, we aim to empower and support these extraordinary individuals through peer-to-peer learning and enable hospitality professionals to share knowledge and elevate each other’s careers.
